Small dog pet supplies car seat

Posted on | December 2, 2008 | No Comments

We’ve all seen people driving around with their cute little dog in the front seat or laps. How cute and just love to open our window and make a quick chat with our loveable friends. As we learn more and more about safety and what causes accidents on the rode we come to learn that having our small dog or small pet loose while driving is probably dangerous and at the minimum unsafe. In this article from the NYTimes.com we hear about Destin’s 60 pound Labrador tumbling out of the vehicle while moving along. Luckily for Destin and her doggie both were not injured.

As the small dog supplies industry continues to mature we are starting to see car and pet product manufactures offering many types of restraining devices. Although many devices exist there seems to be a lack of use in all states. Probably because most people don’t see pets as a distraction or risk and the fact that there aren’t as much emphasize on securing pets. Safety advocates recommend that most dogs be secured in harnesses that strapped across their chests and attached to car seats belts.

According to this article pet safety advocates also warn that dogs should never be tethered to seat belts by their collars. Ouch, that sounds like it would hurt them. Small dog supply manufacturers are now offering pet car seats that elevate dogs and let them look out of the car window.

I read in this article that experts recommend that tiny dogs, cats even birds ride in cages or crates that can be enclosed and then secured with the cars’ seat belts. This sound like a much better idea to me and this would be my route. If I find some other device for a small dog that is better for securing my small doggie I’ll let you know.
