Best Dog Training Book

Posted on | February 26, 2010 | No Comments

Canine training has become main stream with in the last few years due to the Animal Planet and TV shows like the “Dog Whisper” with Cesar Milam. With so many ways to train our dogs it has become very difficult to determine which training book is best. I have read many pet training books, articles and below have listed some items you want to pay attention to when picking the best dog training book.

There are many factors that will determine which book is the best pet education book for you. The most important item will be whether or not the book achieved your goals of training your canine. The fundamental concept for each book is to build a relationship with your animal and learn how to communicate what you want from your dog in a positive, punishment free environment.

There are different techniques used in different books to achieve these concepts. The first and foremost type of canine training is clicker training. This type of training is based on using a small clicker device that makes noise and is used an reinforcement to the puppy. First you condition the puppy to expect a treat when it hears the sound of the clicker. Once you have conditioned the pet you start to train the behavior you want of your animal while clicking the clicker device.

The second type of training is based on using small dog treats to reinforce the behavior you want from you dog. Easy dog obedience instruction or do it yourself dog training stresses using positive reinforcements like small dog treats or positive praise. Each book will have specific details for you to use with its training. Such factors such as the environment you should train the dog in. A time line to use for making sure you dog teaching is progressing. Results that you should see as you train to ensure you are meeting your goals. You will probably need to read a few dog teaching books to see which one works best for you.

Health & Fitness for Your Dog

Posted on | December 15, 2009 | No Comments

Giving your dog the proper health and nutrition they need can be a tough task considering a busy work week and especially during the busy holiday season. You will find that paying attention to you dog’s health will be beneficial for you as well. Exercise for you pet will be exercise for you as well. Here are some tips on health, fitness, and canine obedience you can use all year round.

1. Become acquainted with your breed of dog:
Your breed of dog is unique in some way and will require different health and fitness routine to meet their needs. Learn the breed of your dog, do some research and become familiar with their activity level needs. Becoming familiar with your dog will help you understand and provide the right environment for your pet.

2. Watch food intake
Holiday months usually see an increase in dog treats. Neighbors, family, and friends want to play with our small dog and give them all kinds of food to eat. If you find you dog getting more treats than usually make sure you cut back on the dogs food or spend more time training your dog to help burn the calories.

3. Safety during the Holidays
During the holidays there might be more dangers than usually. Here are a few of the many harmful items you should keep you dog away from: chocolates, poinsettias, electrical cords, and other small kid’s toys.

“The key to your dog’s health is the appropriate amount of a nutritionally balanced diet. Dogs that are fed a high quality pet food do not need table food supplementation. If your dog spends most of his time outside, he will actually need more calories in the winter to stay warm, so you should increase his food intake by 10-15% in the colder months.”
