Dog Flea Prevention

Posted on | December 2, 2008 | 1 Comment

I’m writing today’s blog to provide some information about flea prevention. Unfortunately, these little insects bite us and our pets, can cause bleeding and are just hazardous to our health. In one of the dog training books that I read an experts says that fall is one of the worst times for fleas. Apparently rainy and fairly wet climate is an ideal breeding ground for these nasty little insects. There is hope in the form of preventive measures we can take to help keep them off our loved ones.

The best preventive measure is to ensure our small dogs near develop fleas. From my experience once your small pet gets fleas it may be very difficult to get rid of them. Experts agree that you should keep your pet on a year round basis and just a routine checks can help. Your pet can acquire fleas from the yard or when you are walking them in the neighborhood. You might think your indoor small dog might be safe, but think again. If are your renting a house, previous owners might have had pets with fleas. Beware that people can also bring fleas indoors on clothing. I know I went walking through tall brush once and my pants had all sorts of bugs on them. Gross!

In terms of small dog supplies to help prevent fleas for my dog the best defense has been a product called Advantix. I get this product from my veterinary clinic. It comes in a small capsule that you break open and apply to the back of your pet. This product seems to really work well as my dog doesn’t have any signs of feels. My dog’s fur coat is just beautiful. I’ve tried the dog wash shampoos, but they only seem to protect for a couple of days. I know after I wash my dog it runs outside and starts to roll around in the grass…I’ve tried dog collars, but there protection seems to only protect around the neck area and their protection doesn’t extend to the rear legs. Of course with any products your results may be different.

For your yard there are insecticides you can use for your yard that will help protect your dog. If your yard has fleas it will take patience and persistence, but can be accomplished. If you feel you are not up for doing it there are professional exterminators you can find in your local directory. In terms of indoor protection there are carpet solutions to use and it is recommended that owners vacuum their homes frequently. Make sure you speak with your Vet, other qualified professionals, and you read the directions thoroughly before using any products. Some of the items can be harmful to you, children and your pets.

Again, the best prevention is active prevention. Taking your dog to the Vet for routine check ups helps to spot any possible potential problems. I hope this blog is informative, and entertaining to you.

Good luck with your dog and check out my picks for
