Why Dog Training Is Important
Posted on | May 30, 2010 | No Comments
In my article today I will cover some basics about dog training and why it is so important. In today’s world dogs serve principally as companions in our busy every day lives. This includes our recreational activities and they share their canine life with us. I can’t think of any other pet that forms such a close bond with a person and actually adapts to all possible circumstances of human life. They have the ability to communicate with us in their own special way and that makes them superior to all other household pets.

Most people don’t know, but some dogs behaviors come from their wolf ancestors. See wolves like canines are oriented toward life in a social unit. That is what makes the close relationship between a dog and a human possible. Alike, a wolf pack is organized group under the leadership of two dominant experienced mated pair. There is an intense loyalty among the pack members, with strict rules for coexistence, and teaching their young help to ensure the packs survival.
Like the wolf our domestic dog behave like they are apart of a young wolf pack. They display willingness to fit into our pack and follow our rules. Thing is they need an “alpha leader” to show them acceptable behavior for their life together.
The dog is not like most domestic animals, they do not live in a cage and are free to accompany us almost everywhere. With this in mind it makes it essential that a dog learn the rules for everyday life with us. This includes what behavior is acceptable in and outside of the house. Dogs should not go out on their own to jump on everybody they meet or regard strangers as enemies. When a dog is well integrated into the pack he can stay alone for many hours without acting out or misbehaving.
Coexistence is possible without problems when things are controlled. Remember that our canine has a natural willingness to accept rules and training represents nothing negative to them. Training is actually quite normal for a dog and is important and necessary. It is important as well that we don’t view our canine as a child, partner or toy as this can lead to big problems in training.
Just how much obedience we need is another question we need to answer. It will depend on your goal and your mindset. Some people reject barrack yard type of dog training and others think dogs should be totally free and often struggle to maintain any sort of ‘good’ behavior from their pet. The answer will also have to do with where our dog spends his time. Little training is needed for a guard dog inside of a fenced property. Now a dog that is living with a family and is apart of our daily life will need extensively more training. Look at it this way, the better a dog is trained the easier life will be as you when enjoy it with your dog.

Dog Training Certification
Posted on | May 4, 2010 | No Comments
So you want to be a dog trainer!? Dog instruction is a tremendously rewarding career choice. Due to many popular TV Shows like “The Dog Whisperer” and “Its Me or The Dog” there has been a big movement toward being better pet owners and more importantly providing dog training to help keep our pets happy. With this increase in demand for canine obedience training we also see the need for more certified dog trainers. Now is the time to become a certified trainer as more and more people want to have a well trained and well maintained dog. If you want to be your own boss, have a mobile job, and have fun then keep reading this article about dog training certification.
I would suggest getting certified because it enhances the reputation of a profession. These programs provide an endorsement of an individual specifying that the person has passed the requirements. This process is totally voluntary for each person and there are lots of different programs you can choose from. Although there is take home and online programs, I would suggest you take a program that is hands on. This type will give you the best really world experience with animal training.
The first thing I suggest is that you get familiar with the different certification programs available. With a quick search on the web I found the (APDT) Association of PET DOG Trainers, and (CCPDT) The certification council of Professional Dog Trainers. According to their website the CCPDT’s certification program is the first national certification for dog trainers.(CCPDT). Their testing program was originally created by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. They created this because they saw the need for a certification for this profession. They state that approximately 20 nationally-know dog training professionals worked for three years to research and develop the written examination. The exam is administered two times a year at 700 sites in the USA. The candidates that pass earn the Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed and can use the “CPDT-KA” designation after their names.
I also visited the Association for Pet Dog Trainers website. “APDT is a professional organization of individual trainers who are committed to becoming better trainers through education. (APDT)” This organization offers individual pet dog instructors a voice for the dog community and works to increase dog friendly training techniques. The APDT really gives you good information and really answers lots of the questions you will probably have as you move forward with your certification. Both organizations will be invaluable resources as you move toward your certification.
There are tons of canine obedience instructor training schools. On my website I do discuss programs that I think will be great online resources to help you become a great dog instructor. Visit my site here to read more about these programs and I thank you for visiting with me today.

Annual shots for your dog
Posted on | March 31, 2010 | No Comments
Annual shots for your pet have been regarded as standard practice for dog owners. Now some believe that some of these needling are not necessary for most pets.
With new research everyday it is good to learn about what will benefit our pets the most. “Experts recommend extending the time between select vaccinations and tailoring shots to address the most likely risks facing each individual pet”(Parade, pg10).
In one of my previous articles I discuss learning more about your breed of dog. The reason being is that you can learn more about the common health risk facing your breed and help curve these problems. “The change was triggered by the realization that in some animals, a negative reaction…” (Parade, pg10). Can you imagine going to the doctor and getting lots of unnecessary shots? I would not want to take undue shots and pay for that either. This practice could lead to serious injury to your pet and high medical cost.
“Under the new guidelines, puppies are given a series of vaccinations to initiate disease resistance, followed by fewer core vaccines at longer intervals”(Parade, pg10). This steams from the idea that your pet should only get as many vaccines as they need buy no more.
Of course rabies vaccinations are regulated by law and most if not all states recognize a three-year cycle as mandatory for dogs.
Many veterinarians oppose the changes due to confusion for owners causing missed exams and missed vaccinations. Some owner might stop bring their dogs in for exams, and could possibly missed badly needed vaccinations. “Dr. Welborn suggests that you take your pet for a checkup every six months”(Parade, pg10). It is important to remember that the most important part of preventive dog care is still a regular exam.
I hope you enjoyed this information see you next time,
